| BACKGROUND:
This
special award has been established to recognise, in Sue Fears
honour, the courage of women and girls involved in sport, or active
recreation, who have achieved milestones in or for their sport
through their courage and determination despite obstacles.
The
award process is managed by Womensport & Recreation NSW and
presented once every year. The aim for the award is to develop
a perpetual trophy recognising the courageous women involved in
the NSW sporting industry for their achievements and contributions
to NSW sport and recreation.
Sue Fear was the first Australian woman to climb Mt Everest (from
the north side) in 2003 and was named by the Australian Geographics
as the Adventurer of the Year. She was awarded an
Order of Australia medal in the Queens Birthday Honours
for her achievements in mountaineering and support for the Fred
Hollows Foundation in 2005. Sadly, Sue perished on 28 May 2006
while climbing Mt Manaslu in Nepal.
Sue
was a strong advocate for women in sport. She supported many functions
and was a popular sports star at the Schoolgirls Breakfast
with the Stars events. Sues courage, determination and sheer
willpower to overcome the many obstacles in her way to reach her
goals was an inspiration to many in the sporting and recreation
industry. To commemorate her achievements, Womensport & Recreation
NSW is launching its inaugural Sue Fear Courage and Achievement
Award to celebrate Sues life and what she stood for.<Click
